Youth Memorial Preliminary Summer Workcamp Schedule
Mobile volunteer workcamp ‘Stvor’
During this mobile workcamp volunteers will visit memorial places in Perm region associated with the political repressions of the Soviet period. The volunteers will reach the starting point by bus and then go rafting down two rivers in the north of Perm Region. Their destination is a former Soviet prison camp called Stvor, where the Youth Memorial has been creating an open air museum since 2007.
Dates: 30 April – 5 May 2015, 6 days.
Location: Chusovskoy and Gornozavodsky districts of Perm region, the Koyva and Chusovaya rivers.
Type of work: commemoration work in the former prison camp Stvor on the Chusovaya river.
Number of participants: 10 (the camp is already full!)

Search expedition ‘Along the roads of memory’

In this expedition, volunteers will explore the local lore and regional history. The participants will search and gather materials about political repressions of the Soviet period in Perm region. The initial name of the project is ‘Along the rivers of memory’. However, this time organizers chose to have an overland route through territories that have never been researched before. There is an option that volunteers will travel by their own cars.
Dates: 1 – 9 June 2015, 9 days.
Location: Berezniki and Usolsky district of Perm region.
Type of work: Volunteers will interviews with local residents and gather ‘oral history’, search for witness accounts of the history of political repressions in the USSR and the local area, and set up temporary memorial signs to commemorate the victims of political terror.
Number of participants: 20. Driving license and personal car would be an asset.

Volunteer workcamp The Space of Freedom

Since 2014 Youth ‘Memorial’ has changed the location of its workcamps from ‘Perm-36’ Museum of political repressions to the Chusovaya River Museum, which is located in Chusovoy town, Perm region. The Space of Freedom is the first of the two volunteer workcamps where participants will help around in the museum and its neighborhood. Volunteers will live in a hostel of the ‘Ogonyok’ ski center, situated close to the Museum. At the beginning of the camp, we are planning a trip and excursion to Perm-36 Museum of Political Repressions.
Dates: 20 July – 2 August 2015, 14 days.
Location: Chusovoy town, Perm region, Ethnographical Park ‘Museum of the History of the Chusovaya River’
Type of work: construction and renovating works, landscaping and improving the territory of the museum; gathering oral history (memories) from local residents, looking for evidence of the history of political repressions. The materials gathered by camp participants will be used in the museum exhibition.
Number of participants: 20.

International volunteer workcamp Blurring the Boundaries

Four kilometers away from Chusovoy, near a small industrial town in Perm region, on the crossroads of historical areas, one can find the Ethnographical Museum of history of the Chusovaya River. The museum has a valuable collection of domestic items from Russian peasant households. The museum is situated next door to the Ogonyok ski center and an Olympic Reserve School. This is a lovely place with beautiful nature, though not so popular with tourists. This will be the place for Blurring the Boundaries volunteer workcamp organised by the Youth Memorial together with ‘Bauorden’ Construction Order, our long-standing German partner organisation. We are looking for 16 motivated volunteers. Half of the team will be from Russia and the other half from other countries. You can join the team! At the beginning of the camp, we are planning a trip and excursion to the Museum of political repressions ‘Perm-36’.
The main idea of the project is to provide a free platform for the dialogue between foreigners and Russians, both experienced and new volunteers with different backgrounds, interested in Russia, its history and its present-day life.

Additional information
All camps are aimed to promote of ideas of tolerance, democracy, human rights, active citizenship, and commemoration of history. Volunteers render help to people and establishments in need, or perform special commemoration works devoted to victims of totalitarian regime.
We welcome participants from any corner of the world. All camps will include an educational and cultural program for volunteers: excursions, discussions, meetings with human rights activists and former political prisoners, films, creative tasks and entertainment activities.
All necessary equipment (catamarans, tents) will be provided by the Youth Memorial. Individual equipment (sleeping bags, backpacks) may be provided if necessary. The organization will also cover expenses related to meals, accommodation, educational and cultural events, and local transport (from Perm city to the camp and back).
Participants travelling from abroad and from other parts of Russia are asked to cover their own transport and visa costs as far as Perm.
Applications will be accepted up to no later than two weeks before the start date of your chosen camp. It is possible to apply for more than one camp.
Extra costs: 15 Euro. The money will be included into the budget of the camp and will be spent on the needs of the project.
What we expect from volunteers:
- to participate in the camp from the very beginning till the end (except emergencies);
- high motivation to take part in work and educational part of the camp;
- high working capacity.
Applicants should be more than 16 years old. The main criterion for us is the motivation of the volunteer. We welcome any people, journalists, NGO activists and employees, who are interested in our topics.
Application forms should be sent to the indicated e-mails no later than 2 weeks before the start of the camp. We recommend you to apply as soon as possible, because some of the camps get full 1-2 months before the start of the project.
You can apply for 2-3 different projects if their dates don’t overlap.
